Study Visits

Study Visits (SV) are educational trips between two or more local ELSA groups. Depending on how many different ELSA groups are involved in the trip, they are called bilateral, trilateral or simply multilateral trips. These trips can either be carried out within the home country or internationally. Generally, members of a single foreign ELSA group visit a German local group for a couple of days. They usually stay with the members of the local groups or in youth hostels and attend the programme that has been organised by the local group. One of the main emphases is to give the international guests an insight in the German legal system. In return, the German local group visits the guests in their hometown to attend a similar programme.

In the  Study Visit Guide (2.47 MB) you may find informations about all the german local groups.

A just world in which there is respect for human dignity and cultural diversity.

Study Visits fulfil the ELSA Vision one hundred percent. They contribute to a better understanding of the legal framework within Europe not only between young lawyers but also between a new generation. During a Study Visit everyone has the chance to get an insight in a different culture with its unique customs, to meet interesting new people and possibly to make lifelong friends!

Institutional Visits

Institutional Visits are journeys to the substantial Institutions on a national and on an international level. The Federal Supreme Court of Justice of Germany, the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, the European Parliament and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are just some recent examples of visits that have taken place. These Institutional Visits can last for a day or longer, depending on how far away the participants have to travel and if they want to combine the Institutional Visit with a Study Visit.

Institutional Visits create an opportunity to gain an interesting insight into the legal practice. Above all the are a welcomed change to everyday university life.

Director of International Relations/ Study Visit in local boards

The name of the director might vary but the director’s job is the same. Ideally, he or she should organize at least one Study Visit or Institutional Visit per year. The director is responsible for coordinating the academic and social programme, the accommodation and catering for the guests. An important point is the organisation of financial support to keep the costs for the guests as low as possible. In order to live the ´ELSA Spirit` and to have more fun preparing for the entire visit, the local ELSA group should work together as a team. The same applies when the local group visits their former guests. In this case the director is in charge of the arrivals and departures but also for locating appropriate financial support for any travel costs that may occur.

Director of International Relations in the team of the national board

The Director of International Relations of ELSA Germany is in charge of the Study and Institutional Visits, which are organised within the 42 local groups. He or she informs the Local Director and helps solve problems during the preparation and the carrying out of the actual event. It is also within the role to try to find Study Visit partners and suitable sponsors for events. Every term the director holds workshops on strategy, trouble-shooting and efficiency management of the meetings, and on the national council meetings. Finally the Director of International Relations fosters the international contacts of ELSA Germany to develop a strong international working environment.
